Search Engine Ranking Factors That Matter for Local Businesses

23 April 2024 · by Find2Digital

Google uses a large number of signals to rank pages, and it does not publish a full list. You do not need to know them all. For a local business that depends on bookings, a small group of factors makes most of the difference.

1. Relevance to the search

Your pages need to say clearly what you offer and where. A single "Services" page listing everything in one paragraph gives search engines little to work with. Separate pages for your main services, with the area you serve mentioned naturally, make it much easier to match specific searches.

2. Distance and location

For local searches, how close you are to the searcher is a strong factor you cannot change. What you can control is making your location unmistakable: a full address, an embedded map, and consistent details on your Google Business Profile and in directories.

3. Prominence and reputation

Google looks at how well known and well regarded a business is. Reviews play a big part, especially recent ones that mention the services you offer. Mentions and links from local websites, such as tourism boards, event listings or neighbourhood guides, also help.

4. Content quality

Original, accurate and helpful content consistently performs better than thin or copied text. Write about your actual rooms, treatments or dishes, your prices and your policies. Visitors trust detail, and so do search engines.

5. Page experience

  • Pages should load quickly, particularly on mobile connections.
  • Text should be readable without zooming, and buttons easy to tap.
  • Pop-ups that cover the content on a phone are best avoided.

6. A site search engines can crawl

If search engines cannot reach or read your pages, nothing else matters. Each page should have one clear address, no broken links, and a correct canonical tag. On multilingual sites, each language version needs its own address and should be linked to its translations with hreflang tags.

7. Signals of a real, active business

Up-to-date opening hours, current prices, recent photos and an easy way to book all show that the business is open and well run. They also turn more of your visitors into customers, which is ultimately the point.

Putting it together

You do not need to work on everything at once. Start with relevance and accuracy, then page speed, then reviews. Our SEO best practices for booking businesses turn these factors into a simple checklist.
