What Is SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Booking Businesses

25 April 2024 · by Find2Digital

SEO, short for search engine optimisation, is the work of making your website easy for search engines to understand and worth showing to the people searching. For a hotel, restaurant, salon or clinic, that usually means one thing: when someone nearby searches for what you offer, your business appears, and they can book without picking up the phone.

How Google decides who to show

Every time someone searches, Google tries to find the result that best answers that particular question. It looks at three broad things. First, relevance: does your page clearly say what you do and where you do it? Second, trust: do other sources, such as reviews, directories and local websites, confirm that your business is real and well regarded? Third, experience: does your page load quickly on a phone, is it easy to read, and can a visitor do what they came for?

None of these can be bought directly. They are earned by the way your website is built and by how your business presents itself online.

Why SEO matters more for booking businesses

Most people looking for a table, a room or an appointment decide quickly. They search, compare two or three options, and book the one that looks right and is easiest to reserve. If your business is not on that first screen, you are rarely part of the comparison at all.

Local searches are also very specific: "sports massage near me", "family hotel with parking", "Sunday brunch in the old town". A website that describes your services, location and opening hours clearly has a real chance of matching those searches.

The parts of SEO you can control

  • Clear pages for each service. One page that explains each treatment, room type or menu helps search engines connect you with specific searches.
  • Accurate business details. Your name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory listing.
  • Speed and mobile design. Most local searches happen on phones. A slow or awkward page loses visitors before they reach the booking button.
  • Reviews. Recent, genuine reviews reassure both customers and search engines.
  • A way to book online. When people can reserve directly from your page, more of the visitors that SEO brings actually become customers.

What SEO is not

SEO is not a trick, and it does not work overnight. Promises of guaranteed first-place rankings are a warning sign. Good SEO is closer to good housekeeping: a well-built site, honest and useful content, and consistent information, kept up to date over time.

Where to start

Begin by searching for your own services the way a new customer would, ideally on your phone. Note who appears, how their pages look and how easy it is to book. That simple exercise shows you exactly where your own website needs to improve. If you would like a second opinion, get in touch and we will look at it with you.
